George Caleb Bingham and the Art Detective

George Caleb Bingham (1811-1879) George Caleb Bingham lived at the edge of civilization after his family moved from Virginia to Missouri Territory in 1819. He saw the native peoples, the trappers and fur traders, and the fishermen. He saw the men who worked the steamboats, the lighters, the wood boats. He saw camp meetings, political stumping, elections, and the verdicts …

Fine Art Investigations

Portrait artist Joseph Henry Bush (1794-1865) is a particular favorite of Fine Art Investigations. Emerging momentarily from months of focused research and writing on two special projects, I found this article from the Oldham County (KY) History Center with its high-resolution photograph of Henry Clay by Bush. When Joseph was a young man, Clay took Bush with him to Philadelphia in his carriage. Clay had business there and he dropped off the budding artist at Thomas Sully’s studio. Bush borrowed money for living expenses from the politician. Repaying the debt was a long-term struggle for Bush.
But around 1848, the artist was at the peak of his successful career when he portrayed his former benefactor. If you scroll down just bit in the article, the photograph will appear and in it, the fluid brushstrokes that Bush learned from Sully can be seen as well as the artist’s affection for the man himself.

Fine Art Investigations

Aren’t you glad women don’t have to wear hats like this one worn by Mary White (Mrs. Robert Morris), the richest woman in America in 1782? It is said that her husband financed the American Revolution. The artist of the 40 x 50 inch statuesque depiction was Charles Willson Peale. I like the palette and the brooch on her wrist.
This painting will not be in the book I’m currently bringing to completion, but it may be in the second volume.
