Recto – George Caleb Bingham When George Caleb Bingham painted her portrait in 1835, Dinah Allen was 32 and pregnant with her eighth child. Her ancestors included Captain William Clark of the Lewis & Clark Expedition and James Clark, a governor of Kentucky (1836 – 1839). Fine Art Investigations

George Caleb Bingham, A Landscape Rural Scenery, 1845
Oil on canavas, 29 x 36 inches
Godel & Company on loan to the Metropolitan Museum of Art

Is the scene set in Missouri or is it a memory of a Virginia childhood? Soon I will know.

Here is the first of two flyers about one of the three lectures. The second flyer is in a separate post. The first presentation will be Tuesday, March 21, at 7 pm central time at Central Methodist University in Fayette, Missouri. “The Early Days of George Caleb Bingham in Missouri as an Artist” is the title and coincides with the area’s new “Bingham Trail.”
One minor error in the article – I was ONE OF the guest curators for the exhibition at the Harry S. Truman Presidential Library and Museum.

Here is the second of two links. For the Augusta County Historical Society at the Wayne Theatre in Waynesboro, Virginia on Tuesday, March 28, at 7 pm, I will speak on The Virginia Roots of the Missouri Artist: George Caleb Bingham. For a long time I have dreamed of visiting the area where Bingham was born and spent his first eight years. Two lovely people in Virginia will take me to places related to Bingham (expect photos!) in the Blue Ridge Mountains, and the Shenandoah Valley. This lecture will be live-streamed. If public, I will post how to access it as soon as I know. On Sunday, March 25, at 3 pm I will speak to the Greene County Virginia Historical Society on George Caleb Bingham and the Fine Arts.

Glad your working on a book! More important than social media. 🙂

I always do the genealogy of my portraits. Then I call them by their names. The sad thing is that most of the portraits that have come to us did because somewhere along the way, it was the end of the line.

What type? Mystery? Detective?
